Emily Jane White
There’s a rare confidence to Emily Jane White’s songwriting—at once generous and unflinching, reflective yet unsentimental. While her work shares certain textures with folk music, that label alone can’t contain the breadth of her vision. Her songs edge the borders of dark folk, shoegaze, metal-adjacent, and chamber pop, never losing sight of the light within the gloom, the hope inside the void.

For this live performances, Emily will present a selection of songs spanning her entire catalog on piano and guitar, with special attention to her 2022 release, Alluvion.

YOU FILLED MY SKIRT WITH STONES,
EACH ONE A PROMISE YOU COULDN’T KEEP.

Song Spotlight // When writing this song the image a skirt filled with stones came into my mind as a metaphor for how someone’s unfulfilled promises add up—creating a weight that drags another person into depression and despair.

The suicide of author Virginia Woolf, who put stones in her overcoat pockets before walking into a river in 1941, must have been in the back of my mind, even though I have yet to read her work.

One of the things I love about songwriting is that if you’re not trying to control it, it takes you to places that surprise you.

My current songs are going in a more torchy, dramatic, and classic songwriting direction with edgier guitar sounds. The delicate and ethereal aspects of my earlier work are becoming balanced by something more sinister and edgy which I feel better represents who I’ve always been, but perhaps lacked the vocabulary to express fully.
——————————————————————————————————

I ran down to the river
but it was too dry to drown
so I followed ’til the night fell night fell
like a shutter at the end of land

I knelt down on the edge of knowing
where the river bends it’s knee
under unnamed constellations
I prayed to the darkness
to set me free

From you, from you….you
From you, from you….you

you broke me open
when all I’d known was grief
then you filled my skirt with stones
each one a promise you couldn’t keep

I watched your blue eyes turn
dark as a lock in key
shutting me out
as you were leading me out to sea
out to sea, oh, out to sea

with the blade of your betrayal
I felt my will bleeding out
neck deep in frigid water
I let the the tides drag me down

I sank deep on the verge of drowning
in the arms of a restless sea
I wasn’t looking for a savior
but the savior
turned out to be me

From you, from you….you
From you, from you….you

you broke me open
when all I’d known was grief
then you filled my skirt with stones
each one a promise you couldn’t keep

I watched your blue eyes turn
dark as a lock in key
shutting me out
as you were leading me out to sea
out to sea, oh, out to sea
